Cleveland Browns to trade Colt McCoy?
The Cleveland Browns are wasting no time trying to get rid of Colt McCoy after drafting Brandon Weeden with the 22nd overall pick in the Draft last night. Now, The Browns are looking to trade Colt McCoy to the Green Bay Packers, or whatever team needs a backup Quarterback. Although, Colt himself isn't seeking a trade, I don't think it's entirely up to him.
What bothers me about this more than anything is that if I remember correctly, The Browns told Colt McCoy they weren't gonna draft a QB because they thought he was "the guy" and they expected him to make a big leap in his third season. Now, not only do they draft a QB, but they're looking to get rid of Colt McCoy the next day. I understand why The Browns are doing this because I guess they believe Colt McCoy isn't a starter in the league, but the way they went about things were very shady.
The Browns need to understand a few things. First of all, he's playing in a division that has the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. Already, that's a tough spot to be in. Secondly, look at the team he has around him. Who's the man throwing to? Josh Cribbs? He's a RETURNER!
I'm defending Colt McCoy because he's better than most people give him credit for. His team is so poor and his stats suffer because of that. When you have absolutely nobody that's even remotely credible around you, it's hard to make progress in this league. Matt Ryan came in and had Roddy White, Cam Newton came in and had Steve Smith. Who did Colt have? Peyton Hillis? Where is he now?
You put a solid receiving core and good defense around McCoy and he'll do big things. You put Colt McCoy on a team like The Arizona Cardinals, and I guarantee you they make the playoffs.
Cam Newton came out and broke the record for most pass yards for a rookie and Matt Ryan came out and played like a vet and led his team to the playoffs. These two guys set the precedent that if you're a rookie and you don't produce in your first year in the NFL, then you're a bust.
I know Colt McCoy isn't the only QB with these troubles, but the way The Browns are doing things, it's rather unfair. I hope McCoy goes to a team where he can start that actually has talent and a defense. If I were Colt, I'd call up Arizona.
